My friend and I set up a base on the Skylands server in the wild5 warp and on opening one of the chance cubes the entire area got sucked into a vortex, including us...LOL
Is there any way to restore this or do we just start again?

ROFL!!!!
We had the same reaction when it happened to us.
Ours did the opposite though and sucked everything into a white black hole.
Apparently those 2 effects do a 200 block radius of destruction.
Fun when you are dealing with sky islands.

i've both seen and caused several of those fusion explosions in the mining dimension... it's an instarip for any island, they caused complete desolation in an eight chunk radius around the central point (give or take a few blocks, i counted by chunk while flying)... and islands are only 8 chunks long, fun to watch peoples reactions to them though.

Yes its quite hilarious and yet frightening at the same time.

We were prepared to die cause this is modded minecraft and we do that quite alot...LOL
but with mob griefing/tnt/fire off we thought the landscape would be safe.
I tested on single player using a bedrock platform but even that was not spared :-(
Would it be possible for the admins to have a look at this and see if there is a way to disable
those catastrophic events or ban them so no one can open them.
(The event also destroys other players protected areas that are within the zone)
The poor SkyLands server is looking a bit like a war zone.
I am thoroughly having a ball playing this pack and love the skylands area as I
wanted a break from doing the whole skyblock type setup.
